Definition of
Sherpa People
Sherpa is one of the major ethinic group
of Eastern Himalaya region of the Nepal, as well certain parts of China, Bhutan
& India. The etymological meaning of ‘Sherpa’ or ‘Sherwa’ is “resident of
eastern part”. The dictionary meaning of ‘Sherpa’ is “a member of a Himalayan people living on the border
of Nepal and Tibet, renowned for their skill in mountaineering”.
Hiostory of Sherpa
People
The Sherpa
ancestors are migrated from Kham region of Tibet to Khumbu of Nepal, through
the Nangpa La pass in 14th Century. The Sherpa were nomadic people who
first settled in the Solukhumbu District (Khumbu), Nepal
Sherpa Dresses:
Sherpa men wear long sleeved robes calld chhyiw. Which fall
slightly under the knee and tied at the waist with cloths ribbon called Kara. Chhyiwa
are made from wool. Inside of Chhyiwa they wear trouser Kanam. And an outer
jacket is called Tetung. Women traditionally wear long sleeved floor length dresses
which is called Anggi. And they wear Symjar inside the Anggi instead of shirt/
jacket. They wear colorful stripped aprons in front is called Pangden. And backside apron
is Geptil. Specially married woman only wear Matil/ Geptil but both married and unmarried use Pangden.
